सिंधु  घाटी सभ्यता को हड़प्पा संस्कृति भी कहा जाता है। इसे हड़प्पा संस्कृति इसलिए कहा जाता है कि सर्वप्रथम 1924 में आधुनिक पाकिस्तान के पंजाब प्रान्त के हड़प्पा नामक जगह में इस सभ्यता का बारे में पता चला । इसका कल निर्धारण 2600  और  1900  ईसा पूर्व के बीच किया गया है। इस क्षेत्र में इस सभ्यता से पहले और बाद में भी संस्कृतियाँ अस्तित्व में थी जिन्हे क्रमश आरंभिक और पूर्ववर्ती हड़प्पा कहा जाता है इन संस्कृतियों से हड़प्पा सभ्यता को अलग करने के लिए कभी कभी इसे विकसित हड़प्पा संस्कृति भी कहा जाता है ।
इस परिपक्व सभ्यता के केन्द्र-स्थल पंजाब तथा सिन्ध में था । तत्पश्चात इसका विस्तार दक्षिण और पूर्व की दिशा में हुआ  इस प्रकार हड़प्पा संस्कृति के अन्तर्गत पंजाब, सिन्ध और बलूचिस्तान के भाग ही नहीं, बल्कि गुजरात, राजस्थान, हरियाणा और पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश के सीमान्त भाग भी थे। इसका फैलाव उत्तर में जम्मू से लेकर दक्षिण में नर्मदा के मुहाने तक और पश्चिम में बलूचिस्तान के मकरान समुद्र तट से लेकर उत्तर पूर्व में मेरठ तक था । यह सम्पूर्ण क्षेत्र त्रिभुजाकार है और इसका क्षेत्रफल 12,99,600 वर्ग किलोमीटर है । इस तरह यह क्षेत्र आधुनिक पाकिस्तान से तो बड़ा है ही, प्राचीन मिस्र और मेसोपोटामिया से भी बड़ा है । ईसा पूर्व तीसरी और दूसरी सहस्त्राब्दी में संसार भार में किसी भी सभ्यता का क्षेत्र हड़प्पा संस्कृति से बड़ा नहीं था । अब तक भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में इस संस्कृति के कुल 1000 स्थलों का पता चल चुका है । इनमें से कुछ आरंभिक अवस्था के हैं तो कुछ परिपक्व अवस्था के और कुछ उत्तरवर्ती अवस्था के । परिपक्व अवस्था वाले कम जगह ही हैं । इनमें से आधे दर्जनों को ही नगर की संज्ञा दी जा सकती है । इनमें से दो नगर बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण हैं – पंजाब का हड़प्पा तथा सिन्ध का मोहें जो दड़ो (शाब्दिक अर्थ – प्रेतों का टीला) । दोनो ही स्थल पाकिस्तान में हैं । दोनो एक दूसरे से 483 किमी दूर थे और सिंधु नदी द्वारा जुड़े हुए थे । तीसरा नगर मोहें जो दड़ो से 130 किमी दक्षिण में चन्हुदड़ो स्थल पर था तो चौथा नगर गुजरात के खंभात की खाड़ी के उपर लोथल नामक स्थल पर । इसके अतिरिक्त राजस्थान के उत्तरी भाग में कालीबंगां (शाब्दिक अर्थ -काले रंग की चूड़ियां) तथा हरियाणा के हिसार जिले का बनावली । इन सभी स्थलों पर परिपक्व तथा उन्नत हड़प्पा संस्कृति के दर्शन होते हैं । सुतकागेंडोर तथा सुरकोतड़ा के समुद्रतटीय नगरों में भी इस संस्कृति की परिपक्व अवस्था दिखाई देती है । इन दोनों की विशेषता है एक एक नगर दुर्ग का होना । उत्तर ङड़प्पा अवस्था गुजरात के कठियावाड़ प्रायद्वीप में रंगपुर और रोजड़ी स्थलों पर भी पाई गई है । पुरातत्वविद संस्कृति शब्द का प्रयोग पुरावस्तुओ के ऐसे समूह के लिए करते हैं  जो एक विशिष्ट शैली के होते हैं और सामान्यतया एक साथ , एक विशेष भौगोलिक क्षेत्र एवम कालखण्ड से सम्बद्ध पाये  जाते है ।  हड़प्पा सभ्यता के सन्दर्भ में विशिष्ट पुरावस्तुओं में मुहरें, मनके, बाँट, पत्थर के फलक तथा पकी हुई ईंटें सम्मिलित हैं  । ये वस्तुएं अफगानिस्तान, जम्मू, बलूचिस्तान, गुजरात, जैसे क्षेत्रों से मिली है , जो एक दूसरे से लम्बी दूरी पर स्थित है ।

मुग़ल काल

Mughal Kings
  • भारत का इतिहास प्रागैतिहासिक काल से आरम्भ होता है। 3000 ई. पूर्व तथा 1500 ई. पूर्व के बीच सिंधु घाटी में एक उन्नत सभ्यता वर्तमान थी, जिसके अवशेष मोहन जोदड़ो (मुअन-जो-दाड़ो) और हड़प्पा में मिले हैं। 
  •  अठारहवीं शताब्दी के शुरू में अंग्रेजों की ईस्ट इंडिया कम्पनी ने बम्बई (मुम्बई), मद्रास (चेन्नई) तथा कलकत्ता (कोलकाता) पर क़ब्ज़ा कर लिया।
  •  1526 ई. में बाबर ने आसानी से दिल्ली की सल्तनत को उखाड़ फैंका। उसने पानीपत की पहली लड़ाई में अन्तिम सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी को हरा दिया और मुग़ल वंश की प्रतिष्ठित किया
  • मुग़ल वंश का संस्थापक "ज़हीरुद्दीन मुहम्मद बाबर" था। बाबर का पिता 'उमर शेख़ मिर्ज़ा', 'फ़रग़ना' का शासक था, जिसकी मृत्यु के बाद बाबर राज्य का वास्तविक अधिकारी बना।
  • 'नासिरुद्दीन मुहम्मद हुमायूँ' का जन्म बाबर की पत्नी ‘माहम बेगम’ के गर्भ से 6 मार्च, 1508 ई. को काबुल में हुआ था। बाबर के 4 पुत्रों- हुमायूँ, कामरान, अस्करी और हिन्दाल में हुमायूँ सबसे बड़ा था। बाबर ने उसे अपना उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त किया था।
  • शेरशाह सूरी के बचपन का नाम 'फ़रीद ख़ाँ' था। वह वैजवाड़ा (होशियारपुर 1472 ई.) में अपने पिता 'हसन ख़ाँ' की अफ़ग़ान पत्‍नी से उत्पन्न था। उसका पिता हसन, बिहार के सासाराम का ज़मींदार था।
  • अकबर महान ने हिन्दुओं पर से जज़िया उठा लिया और राज्य के ऊँचे पदों पर बिना भेदभाव के सिर्फ़ योग्यता के आधार पर नियुक्तियाँ कीं।
  • 'नूरुद्दीन सलीम जहाँगीर' का जन्म फ़तेहपुर सीकरी में स्थित ‘शेख़ सलीम चिश्ती’ की कुटिया में राजा भारमल की बेटी ‘मरीयम-उज़्-ज़मानी’ के गर्भ से 30 अगस्त, 1569 ई. को हुआ था। अकबर सलीम को ‘शेख़ू बाबा’ कहा करता था। सलीम का मुख्य शिक्षक अब्दुर्रहीम ख़ानख़ाना था।
  • शाहजहाँ (1627 - 1658) का जन्म जोधपुर के शासक राजा उदयसिंह की पुत्री 'जगत गोसाई' (जोधाबाई) के गर्भ से 5 जनवरी, 1592 ई. को लाहौर में हुआ था। उसका बचपन का नाम ख़ुर्रम था। ख़ुर्रम जहाँगीर का छोटा पुत्र था, जो छल−बल से अपने पिता का उत्तराधिकारी हुआ था।
  • मुहीउद्दीन मुहम्मद औरंगज़ेब' का जन्म 4 नवम्बर, 1618 ई. में उज्जैन के ‘दोहद’ नामक स्थान पर मुमताज़ के गर्भ से हुआ था। 
  • बहादुर शाह ज़फ़र का जन्म 24 अक्तूबर सन् 1775 ई. को दिल्ली में हुआ था। बहादुर शाह ज़फ़र मुग़ल साम्राज्य के अंतिम बादशाह थे। इनका शासनकाल 1837-58 तक था। बहादुर शाह ज़फ़र एक कवि, संगीतकार व खुशनवीस थे
